Ninth Grade Ticktockers Learn about Stress Relief through Yoga!

Submitted by Carley Williams

February 23, 2014

Today the 9th graders went to Gym Jam for a yoga lesson! For an hour, we had a fun class of yoga and stretching. After, we made some berry smoothies to relax, rejuvenate, and repair all of our problems. It was quite a day to freshen up the freshman.

11th Grade Activity: Healthy Heart Day

In 11th grade, part of our NCL focus is on women’s health. For our grade level meeting this month, we attended the Healthy Heart Fair at the Intermountain Medical Center. We learned about ways to eat healthier, stay active and take care of our hearts. Some of the information we received was about finding ways to worry less and be less stressed such as:
1.     Exercise—exercise has a “tranquilizer effect” that helps you to relax.
2.     Check the facts—sometimes we exaggerate the things we worry about. Most of the bad things we imagine never come to pass. Check the facts to see if it is even worth the worry!
3.     Distract yourself—whenever you start to worry, practice switching your attention to something else—even snapping a rubber band you wear around your wrist can help. Train yourself to eliminate negative thoughts.
4.     Schedule worry time—if you must worry, set aside 20 minutes or so each day to jot down the big and little things that are bothering you. Once you have a list, work to problem solve. Making decisions and taking action reduce worry and stress.

Most people don't know that NCL is not only a charity organization, but we also work on leadership and educating ourselves about important topics. It was a great grade level activity!

TickTockers Volunteer at the "Super Reader Party"
Sarah Frasier-9th Grade

On the first of February a couple of us headed to the Utah state fair park to help out at the "Super Reader party". There were at least 30 booths with fun and educational activities. It was really cool to see little kids interested in learning new things. I think KUED did a great making children aware of the world of knowledge and the adventures you can have with it.
