Ronald McDonald House Project: Submitted by Paige Harmon
9th grade Ticktockers Service Project!
The 9th grade ticktockers gathered on saturday january 12th to put together hygiene kits for the families at the Ronald McDonald House. There was lots of food and candy to enjoy while we filled plastic bags with shampoo, conditioner, and body soap. After our project we all watched the movie Babies. This movies centers around four new mothers from all over the world and the differences and similarities of taking care of a child. The four families were from Namibia, Mongolia, California, and Tokyo. We got to see the lifestyles of the families as well as the way the babies lived. Ponijao, from Namibia, spent his infancy playing with another baby and experiencing the wilderness. Ponijao's mother cared for her baby in many ways that are not as common in the U.S. but still loving, she cleaned her baby by licking off all the dirt and then spitting it out. Mari, from Tokyo, was born into a very loving family. She lived a normal life with a big family and lots of toys. Bayar, from Mongolia, lives in a hut with the rest of his family including an older brother. Bayar and his mother were transported from the hospital by a motorcycle driven by his father. Bayar was wrapped tightly in a blanket for most of the first year of his life. When he finally did begin to walk his naughty brother loved to hit him with blankets until he cried. Bayar loved to walk around and be with all the cows around his house. Hattie, from California, lives with her mother and father. Her mother loves to take Hattie to yoga classes and lounging in the hot tub. These four families are all different but all have one goal, to care for the newest member of the family.

11th Grade Leans Self Defense
The 11th grade ticktocker class participated in a crash course on self defense taught by Sierra. Sierra is a black belt in American kenpo karate and has 12 years of experience, 3 of which are with a black belt. We were taught how to get out of the most common situations girls find themselves in when a predator attacks. The skills we learned were precise and easy to remember just in case we need to protect ourselves. The most important thing to remember about attacking your attacker is to go for the soft parts of the body and not to rely on strength. This was a great opportunity for the 11th grade class and we encourage other grades to participate in a similar self defense course.

Why Join NCL?
Attention ticktockers!
It's that time of year again. You have the opportunity to invite your friends to join NCL with you this spring. But why should they listen to you? What makes this program great? Now's your opportunity to share with us what you've gotten out of NCL and why you love being a ticktocker.
All spring, we will be looking for short articles from girls of all grade levels to post here about their NCL experience. What has been your favorite volunteer opportunity? What are the other girls like? What didn't you expect when you joined? What is your favorite memory from this year? What lessons have you learned from being a part of NCL?
I didn't have any school friends or siblings who had been a part of NCL before I was offered the opportunity to join. If it weren't for great patroness willing to reach out to other people in her community, I wouldn't be a member today. With this blog and our other NCL sites, you have an ideal way to reach out to others through the internet.
Please send me your photographs, stories, a simple paragraph (or even just a sentence or two!) about your experience. Time you spend on this can count as league hours!
