9th Grade's Red Carpet Welcome

The ninth grade recently enjoyed a fun and worthwhile grade level meeting. It was our “Red Carpet Welcome.” We wore funny evening gowns from thrift stores or our mom’s closet. Some girls even wore their mothers’ old prom or bridesmaid dress! An NCL correspondent filmed and interviewed us as we walked down the red carpet. We then watched these interviews on a big theater screen. We laughed and had a fun time getting to know one another better.

We were also able to do some good for our philanthropy, the Ronald McDonald House. We brought items to contribute to “welcome bags.” When families come for hospital treatments, they often don’t know how long they will be here. The Ronald McDonald House provides these families with “welcome bags” that include various toiletries such as:  shampoo and conditioner, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, dental floss, deodorant, lotion, chap stick, hair brush, cotton swabs, hand sanitizer, and tissue. We also wrote inspirational quotes to include with the bags. Through generous donations, we were able to complete thirty-nine bags! We’re excited to deliver them to the Ronald McDonald House. In some small way, we hope we have helped ease the burdens of some families staying at the Ronald McDonald House. It was a fun and meaningful evening!

What have the Ticktockers been up to this summer?

So many Ticktockers have take opportunities this summer to get to know their new grade level charity! I had an opportunity to tour the Utah Food Bank, as well as help them sort cans and package pasta along with the rest of the 12th grade this summer.  Even if this isn't your grade level charity, the food bank is a great place to serve. Whatever the task they put you to, you're being active, interacting with other people, and you feel like you're really making an impact.

I also had the chance to tour the Ronald McDonald house along with my sister and the other incoming freshmen. I wasn't a part of NCL in 9th grade, so I had never been inside a Ronald McDonald house. It was such an interesting experience to learn about what this charity does! There are so many diverse opportunities to volunteer there. They are constantly catering to a new group of families that live in the house while their children receive medical treatment. Volunteers can do anything from arrange a movie night for the kids to design magnets for the magnet boards found on the walls of each family's room.

Now school's approaching. Make sure to set aside time in your schedules for some of these great volunteer options during the upcoming school year!

Today the 9th graders went to Gym Jam for a yoga lesson! For an hour, we had a fun class of yoga and stretching. After, we made some berry smoothies to relax, rejuvenate, and repair all of our problems. It was quite a day to freshen up the freshman.

Learning those Yoga Positions!
